{"id":371,"date":"2014-04-23T12:08:13","date_gmt":"2014-04-23T12:08:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.internet-tools.co.uk\/blog\/?p=371"},"modified":"2014-04-23T12:08:13","modified_gmt":"2014-04-23T12:08:13","slug":"fixing-my-old-macbook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.internet-tools.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/2014\/04\/23\/fixing-my-old-macbook\/","title":{"rendered":"Fixing my old MacBook"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Fixing my old MacBook<\/h2>\n<p>I&#8217;ve always been a fan of PC&#8217;s and Intel architectures, but decided a few years ago to my a MacBook to basically <em>see what it&#8217;s all about&#8230; <\/em><\/p>\n<p>I have to say that I fell in love with it immediately &#8211; not particularly because its easy to use (its not!), or that the GUI is more logical (nope&#8230; not that either!), but the fact that it goes from &#8216;power on&#8217; to &#8216;surfing the internet&#8217; in about 5 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not exaggerating here&#8230; I always leave it in &#8216;sleep&#8217; mode, and from opening the lid to surfing the net really is only a few seconds &#8211; normally by the time I log in, email is already downloading.<\/p>\n<p>Since I bought my cheap (\u00a3995!)\u00a0 plastic-body Mac about 5 years ago, I have religiously upgraded it through from Snow Leopard to Lion, Mountain Lion and now Mavericks. Each upgrade caused a degree of instability for a while, but then settled down. Unfortunately this &#8216;settling down&#8217; period just hasn&#8217;t happened with Mavericks and that god-awful spinning beach-ball has almost driven me to throwing my poor little MacBook at a wall or start stamping on it repeatedly&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Finally this weekend I could take no more and decided to &#8216;wipe it&#8217; and start again &#8211; all I can say is &#8220;why didn&#8217;t I do this sooner&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here is the process I used to get my MacBook back to a speedy functioning laptop again:-<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Backup all pictures \/ music etc.\n<ul>\n<li>Time Machine<\/li>\n<li>External Drive<\/li>\n<li>Drag-n-drop over a network share to another PC (This is what I did)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #800000;\"><strong>Make sure you have your Apple App Store email address and password before continuing<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li>Power off the Mac<\/li>\n<li>Press and Hold Command and R whilst powering on and keep holding them down until recovery screen appears (read this: <a title=\"Apple Recovery Mode\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/osx\/recovery\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.apple.com\/osx\/recovery<\/a> )<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.internet-tools.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/recovery1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-374 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.internet-tools.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/recovery1-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"recovery1\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.internet-tools.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/recovery1-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.internet-tools.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/recovery1.jpg 571w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Select <strong>Disk Utility<\/strong> and then select <strong>Wipe Disk<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.internet-tools.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/recovery1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-374 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.internet-tools.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/recovery1-300x188.jpg\" alt=\"recovery1\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.internet-tools.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/recovery1-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.internet-tools.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/recovery1.jpg 571w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wipe the main MacBook Drive<\/li>\n<li>Close the Disk Utility tool and return to the Recovery Screen<\/li>\n<li>Select Reinstall OS X and follow the on-screen instructions (it will ask you for a WiFi password and Apple App Store credentials to confirm you have a MacBook)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.internet-tools.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/recovery3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-375 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.internet-tools.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/recovery3-300x225.png\" alt=\"recovery3\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.internet-tools.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/recovery3-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/www.internet-tools.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/recovery3-900x676.png 900w, https:\/\/www.internet-tools.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/recovery3.png 1022w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s it!
